Who Is a Candidate for Cleft Lip Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Dr. Sundine will review your medical history and closely examine your nasal anatomy to determine if you are a good candidate for nose reshaping surgery. If you are a smoker or are taking any herbal supplements, you must disclose this information. Smoking compromises blood flow to your skin and will greatly affect the healing process. Dr. Sundine will most likely ask you to quit before proceeding with surgery.

The Cleft Lip Rhinoplasty Procedure in Newport Beach

For patients with cleft lip nasal deformities, Dr. Sundine always uses the open rhinoplasty approach. Open rhinoplasty involves incisions in the columella, the strip of skin between the nostrils; the top layers of skin are then lifted back. This procedure allows greater visibility and manipulation of the underlying nasal structures. The results are also more predictable. Rhinoplasty surgery is performed under general anesthesia at an accredited outpatient facility. You will be sent home a few hours after surgery.

Recovering from Cleft Lip Rhinoplasty Surgery

Following your cleft lip rhinoplasty surgery, you will have an external splint and surgical dressings above the lips. Your face may feel sore and swollen, but you will not experience any unbearable pain. You will also have splints on the inside of the nose, which help keep the newly altered tissue in place while it heals. Dr. Sundine will provide you with antibiotics, pain medicine, and detailed aftercare instructions. Your bandages will most likely be removed within a week after surgery.

During your recuperation, please don’t smoke. Smoking compromises blood flow to the skin and will impede the healing process. Also, you should avoid any extensive physical activities, blowing your nose, and taking blood thinners or herbal supplements. Dr. Sundine will closely monitor you regularly. If all goes well, you will be able to return to your daily activities within 10 days. The results will appear gradually and you should achieve your final outcome within 12 months of surgery.
