What to Expect on the Day of VBeam-Pulsed Dye Laser

Both the patient and Dr. Sundine wear protective eyewear. The laser is calibrated based on the individual and the specific condition being treated because each individual and each condition is unique. The careful calibration of the laser maximizes the result you will see in the following treatment.

Recovery

Immediately after the treatment, you should expect there to be some redness, swelling, and sometimes a temporary bruise or purple color to the skin. You will notice most of the swelling on the first morning after treatment, particularly under the eyes that will last two to three days. One of the best ways to minimize swelling is to apply a cold compress to the treatment area every hour for about 10 minutes until you go to bed. You should sleep elevated the first night and take antihistamines (Claritin or Zyrtec) for the first 5 days to also help decrease swelling.

There may also be an intense heat sensation for two to three hours after treatment. Most of the redness will resolve itself within a few hours after treatment, but you may notice a “rosy glow” for a few weeks, but it can be covered with makeup to minimize the redness. If you are on daily aspirin, iron supplementation, anticoagulants, or herbal supplements (Ginkgo, Garlic, Ginseng) you may bruise more easily. If a crust or scab develops, keep the area moist until the crust falls on its own.

*Do NOT pick at the area. Some patients can experience itchy skin during the healing process, but this can be treated with some moisturizer.
