What is a Mini-Facelift?

The Mini-Facelift is a minimally invasive plastic surgery procedure that addresses wrinkles and sagging skin without the scarring and side effects of a regular facelift. A mini-facelift can improve skin texture, define the jawline, and dramatically improve your appearance.

This procedure involves the placement of incisions in front of the ears which extend from the hairline to the bottom of the earlobe. Dr. Sundine will then gently pull the skin and tissues up and outward the ear. Excess skin and tissue are removed to tighten the appearance of the skin.

Facelift vs. Mini-Facelift

The main difference between a Mini-Facelift and a Full Facelift is the extent of the incisions that do not extend into the hair.

A Mini-Facelift is best for patients who would like to reduce the initial, minimal signs of aging. It reduces minor sagging in the neck, jawline, and cheeks only, and does not affect the wrinkles in the forehead and lines around the eyes.

To be a good candidate, patients should have sagging in their cheeks and neck, be in overall good health, and be non-smokers (or at least be able to stop for a while). All patients should have reasonable expectations of the procedure and should understand that the result will not be as pronounced as would be achieved with a full face and neck lift in combination with adjunctive procedures such as fat grafting and dermabrasion.

What’s The First Step?

Once the two of you have agreed on every aspect of your Mini-Facelift, Dr. Sundine will use the information he gathers during your initial consultation and create your customized surgical plan. Avoid any aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen, fish oil, and any blood-thinning medicines for two weeks before the procedure.

What to Expect on the Day of a Mini-Facelift

After placing the local anesthesia Dr. Sundine will make small inconspicuous incisions around your ears and hairline to avoid visible scars. Using these openings, the jowls and cheeks are tightened, the wrinkles are smoothed, and the sagging skin is treated. No drains are required for the procedure.

Recovery

After your surgery, you will be able to return home, however, you will need to have a friend or family member available to provide you a ride home and aide you around the house for the next day or so. You will be able to clean your face and hair that same day, but please be extra careful when doing so. You can expect some bruising, discomfort, and swelling for at least the first three weeks post-surgery. For the first week or so, Dr. Sundine will have you wear a compression garment, neck support, and a drain to help reduce swelling and allow any excess fluids to drain appropriately.

After the first week, you have your sutures and bandages removed by Dr. Sundine, who will also observe your recovery and healing. Most patients choose to stay home from work for at least the first week so they can heal comfortably. During the second week, you may notice a tight sensation in the surgical area, but this is normal and is part of the healing process. While you will be able to notice some visible changes as the swelling and bruising subsides, you can expect your final results to be apparent around six months post-surgery.
