Jaw AbnormalitiesOn November 21, 2013, Dr. Michael Sundine presented his experience in neonatal mandibular distraction at the 11th Annual Academic Day for Neonatologists of Southern California. The program featured speakers from across the country lecturing jaw abnormalities, surgical and non-surgical topics. A well-regarded figure in the treatment of jaw abnormalities, Dr. Sundine has led the mandibular distraction team in the neonatal intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital of Orange County to lengthen small mandibles in neonates with Pierre Robin sequence. With mandibular distraction, the CHOC team has been able to prevent the need for a tracheostomy in 16 of 18 neonates for a success rate of 88%.
